The Architect of Hollywood

Ever heard of Paul Revere...Williams?

To ring in Black History Month, I’m excited to share this

incredible story of a truly inspiring man!

So, you probably hadn’t heard HIS name, but how about…

Frank Sinatra?

Lucille Ball?

Barron Hilton?

Danny Thomas?

The list goes on and on… they all hired Paul R. Williams to design their dream homes.

Hollywood-style!

But one reason Williams was so incredibly talented was that he didn’t stick with ONE style.

He designed homes after learning about his client’s personalities, habits, lifestyle, hometown, even their egos! He asked questions. Then he got to work.

He gained the nickname of the “Upside-down Draftsman” because so many people that hired him wouldn’t sit NEXT to him so he had to draw upside-down from across the table.

As a black man who began his career in the 1920’s, he faced countless hurdles, and leapt high above them all.

And he didn’t stop at just celebrity homes.

Ever heard of the La Concha Motel?

Or the Beverly Hills Hotel?

Or the Theme Building at LAX?

Yep, Williams again. And again. And again.

His “hobby” was social housing for low-income families.

He designed churches, tombs(!), halls, schools…

This trailblazing pioneer cleared the way for countless others that followed.

Look him up! A blog cannot do him justice, and you’ll love the story!

Not to mention the homes!

Spectacular and unique.

I’ll leave you with a quote from the man himself—

“Without having the wish to 'show them,' I developed a fierce desire to 'show myself, I wanted to vindicate every ability I had. I wanted to acquire new abilities. I wanted to prove that I, AS AN INDIVIDUAL, deserved a place in the world."
