“My favorite kind of house is an American Foursquare,” is what you never hear. Like, ever.
But we all love them!
How do we not know why??
Here’s the what-and-why of these classics…
Originally built (like many) to be affordable, these babies have grown, matured, and rocked the casbah (neighborhood), and still most people don’t know the name!
A basic American Foursquare (let’s go with A4Square) had a square (whodathunk?) footprint and a wide porch.
So it didn’t need a large plot, cause they built it up! Not out!
There different styles, but they all began as a pretty basic, solid homestead.
Now, with open floor-plans and updating, these beauties are all that.
And a bag of chips. And salsa.
The name came from some super creative person who needed a for a house with four rooms downstairs and (you guessed it) four rooms upstairs.
Like a...square.
That’s American.
They have evolved and are often the gem-of-the-block.
Huge front porches. Third floor dormers.
